Meter Reading and Billing Schedule

Starting with the 2nd Quarter 2025, all residential and commercial accounts in town will follow the same quarterly billing schedule. Additionally, all water meters are now read monthly to ensure accurate usage tracking.   Previously, the township used six different billing cycles. This change to a unified quarterly schedule creates consistency, simplifies operations, and enhances customer service.

  • Residential and Commercial Accounts: Billed quarterly (every 3 months)
  • High-Usage Accounts: Billed monthly, based on monthly readings

Your bill is designed to provide the information you need to know about your account.  To better understand your bill, view our Bill Explanation.

Final Meter Readings

Final meter readings are required if you are selling your home or if a tenant is moving out.  Please contact our office at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a final water meter reading.

Appointments are scheduled Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.  The meter reader read the water meter remotely and no one needs to be at the property.  Requests may also be emailed or submitted online.

The account will be changed to the new owner's or tenant's name on the closing date.

Water and Sewer Rates

The Nutley Water and Sewer Utility is a division within the Department of Public Works and operates solely on revenues received for the services rendered.  This means tax dollars are not necessary for this utility to function under normal conditions.

The rates to be charged to consumers for water established by the Township of Nutley
Board of Commissioners is as follows:

Sewer Rates - Ordinance 3581 - Effective May 26, 2025
Water Rates - Ordinance 3552 - Effective July 1, 2024

Sewer Rates

As of July 1, 2024, the cost of the sewer system was removed from the tax bill and each property owner will receive in their water bill a separate charge for sewage usage.

The sewer charge will be issued quarterly and be based on actual water supplied to the property determined by meter readings (water in—water out). Where meter readings cannot determine water usage, the charge will be estimated using industry-standard engineering methods. The rates have been calculated to ensure fairness.

** NEW ** Residential Tier 1 - 3rd Quarter Sewer Bill Averaging

We understand that many residents are concerned about being charged sewer fees for water that does not enter the sanitary sewer system, such as water used for lawn sprinklers, gardening, or filling swimming pools during the summer.

In response to this concern, the Township has amended its sewer ordinance to establish a fairer approach to calculating third-quarter sewer charges, when outdoor water use is typically at its peak. Beginning this year, the third-quarter sewer charge will be based on the average water consumption from the previous four quarters.  This new method reflects your typical indoor water use, helping to ensure that sewer charges more accurately match the amount of water entering the sewer system.

We appreciate the community’s input on this issue and remain committed to fair and transparent utility billing practices.

If you have questions or need assistance understanding how this change affects your bill, please contact the Water & Sewer Department.
