Tax Collector's Office

General Information

The Tax Collector is responsible for the billing, collection, reporting and enforcement of municipal taxes for the Township of Nutley. As a statutory officer of the State of New Jersey, the Tax Collector is obligated to follow all the State Statutes regarding property tax collection including billing, due dates, interest on delinquent tax payments and tax sale procedures.

Your current tax bill covers the last half of the current year and the first half of the following year. Property taxes are due on February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1.  Failure to receive a tax bill does not exempt you from paying taxes or the interest due on delinquent taxes. The Township does permit a 10 day grace period.  The State of New Jersey does not permit postmark. Taxes must be received in the office on or before the 10th.  However, if the 10th falls on a weekend or legal holiday, you have until the next business day to make payment.  All payments may be made by cash, check, or money order, e-check, debit, or credit cards. Credit card payment will be accepted until November 15th on current year taxes.

**** Credit cards can be used for payment of taxes until subject to Tax Sale ****

Any open balance as of December 31st of the current year is subject to tax sale. The tax sale list will be available on this web site as well as advertised in the legal section of the Nutley Sun, a weekly paper available on Thursdays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get more information about my school and county taxes?

Please direct any questions that you may have regarding your school taxes to Karen Yeamans, Nutley School District Business Administrator, at 973-661-3500.  Questions regarding your County taxes should go to the Essex County Administrator at 973-621-4432.

Can I pay my property taxes or water bills with my credit card?

YES.  You have the ability to pay your tax and water bills online at www.nutleynj.org using your credit card or e-check.  In order to pay your bill online, you will need to use your PIN, which can be found on your bill.  You may still pay by cash or by check made payable to the Township of Nutley. Please remember to send in your bill stub with your payment to insure that your account is properly credited.

If I have a mortgage, do I have to pay my tax bill or does my mortgage company?

Generally, NO.  If your tax bill states “ADVICE COPY”, your mortgage company has received the actual bill for payment.  The Township provides a courtesy copy for your records labeled “Advice Copy”.  If your bill does not state “ADVICE COPY”, you are responsible for paying the taxes and you must use this bill to pay the taxes.

I am a Senior Citizen. Can my property taxes be frozen?

YES, if you meet the full criteria of the Property Tax Reimbursement Program.  The State of New Jersey administers this program and reimburses eligible senior citizens and disabled persons for property tax increases.  Your total annual income must have been $89,013 or less for 2018 and $87,268 for 2017, regardless of your marital/civil union status.  The filing deadline for 2018 applications is October 31, 2019. You can call the NJ Division of Taxation between 8:30 a.m. & 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday at 1-800-882-6597 for assistance or online at: www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/ptr/geninfo.shtml
