HOPE - Family and Drug Alcohol Policy Contract

The _________________ family is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy home environment in which every member of this family can feel loved and protected.  That commitment is jeopardized when any family member illegally uses drugs or abuses alcohol.

This family believes that experimenting with marijuana or other illegal drugs is dangerous and harmful to children and adults.  The extended use of any of these substances will harm the lungs and other organs, impair mental functions, weaken the ability to concentrate and think, and significantly affect motivation and the ability to do well at school or work.  This family also understands that the use of alcohol before the age of 21 is illegal, and that the use of alcohol before the age of 21 is harmful to the developing adolescent brain.  Therefore, the _________________ family has established the following policy:

  1. It is a violation of family policy for any family member to use, possess, sell, trade, offer for sale or offer to buy illegal drugs or otherwise engage in the illegal use of drugs.
  2. It is a violation of family policy for any member of the family who is under the age of 21 to use, possess, buy, or attempt to buy any form of alcoholic beverage.
  3. It is a violation of this family policy for any family member to use prescription drugs illegally, i.e., to use prescription drugs that have not been legally obtained or in a manner or for a purpose other than as prescribed.  Violations of this family policy are subject to disciplinary action.

The adults in this family have decided that drug use and alcohol abuse are significant threats, and that random drug and alcohol testing is an appropriate response to these threats.  Therefore, all children in this family between the ages of 12 and 21 years old will undergo random testing for the presence of illegal drugs and/or alcohol.  The purpose of drug and alcohol testing is to keep children in this family from using drugs, and from drinking alcohol before the age of 21.

Children between the ages of 12 and 21 will be asked to voluntarily submit drug and/or alcohol test on a random (monthly) basis.  The test will be administered by a parent or adult caregiver within the family. Refusal to submit to the tests will result in the loss of privileges detailed in the Parent/Child contract.

The goal of this family policy is to balance respect and love for family members with the need to maintain a safe, happy and healthy drug-free home, while raising drug free productive members of society with promising futures.  The intent of this policy is to protect the children and adults of this family, while sending a clear message that the illegal use of drugs, and the abuse of alcohol are not permitted within this family.
