2015 RAKES Program Helps Over 75 Senior Citizens

Department of Public Works’ Commissioner Dr. Joseph Scarpelli reported that the 8th Annual RAKES (Random Acts of Kindness Extended to Seniors) Program, with over 150 volunteers, cleaned and bagged the leaves of over 75 senior citizens’ properties.

“I would like to thank the many volunteers that donated their time and efforts. Lincoln School’s Student Council, Boy and Girl Scout troops, the Knights of Columbus, Cross Fit-Nutley Gym, the NHS athletic teams, along with a number of other civic groups participated. A special thank you to Mr. Piro and the high school coaching staffs for their assistance in making the program a success,” said Dr. Scarpelli. “Our citizens, along with the town’s many civic and service organizations, continue to make a difference in our community. It is this volunteer spirit that makes Nutley a unique and special place to live and work,” said Scarpelli.

Commissioner Scarpelli continues to institute changes that decrease spending and reduce manpower. The 2015 DPW budget is actually less than 2008 when Scarpelli took office.

“I have continued to make the necessary changes that have made the DPW more efficient and streamlined. I am committed to continuing our cost effectiveness, along with seeking available grant money, to help our bottom line. At the same time, we must maintain and look to expand those services that either increase our revenue stream or utilize volunteers,” concluded Scarpelli.
