Commissioner Tucci & the Parks and Recreation Department Welcome Back Annual Fishing Derby

Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci and the Department of Parks and Recreation were pleased to host the return of the Township of Nutley’s Annual Fishing Derby this past Saturday. Held at the Mud Hole (Memorial Park), this beloved community tradition saw dozens of families gather for a morning of relaxation and recreation. The event marked a significant return for the derby, which had been on hiatus since the pandemic began.

“Good morning,” Commissioner Tucci remarked as he addressed the attendees. “While we were required to pause in 2020 due to the pandemic and later to facilitate necessary improvements here at the Mud Hole, we are back and bigger and better than ever. Today, the Mud Hole has been stocked with 625 fish and 10,000 minnows so there's a lot for you to catch!”

The Commissioner provided a brief history of the derby, noting its inception in 1960 by then-Mayor Harry Chenoweth and the Nutley Police Department. For many decades thereafter, the competition received steadfast support from Nick Mainiero Sr. and Mainiero’s Sports Shop. “Let us have a round of applause for Nick, who joins us here today,” Commissioner Tucci added.

In a special presentation, the Parks and Recreation Department honored Mr. Mainiero with a commemorative plaque recognizing his decades of service. The inscription read: “In recognition of over 40 years of dedicated service to our community, we present this to Nick Mainiero Sr.,” Commissioner Tucci stated.  “We thank you for your generosity, your dedication, and in helping us reel in great memories.”

“I'm a little speechless right now,” a visibly moved Mainiero said as he accepted the plaque. “I want to  thank Commissioner Tucci and the members of the Township who put so much work into this. I know it's been fun for my wife and me and my family. I hope you guys continue doing this and may it go on for generations. Thank you.”

Following the presentation, Commissioner Tucci invited Mr. Mainiero to officially commence the competition. “Fishermen, prepare your gear. On the count of three: one, two, three—cast!”
