Nutley’s Second Bounce Out the Stigma Program Fosters Friendships and Acceptance for Nutley Youth

Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci and the Nutley Department of Parks and Recreation brought back the acclaimed Bounce Out the Stigma Basketball Program to the Township this week. The program is specifically designed for children with autism, ADHD, epilepsy, and mental/emotional challenges. Bounce Out the Stigma aims to provide an inclusive, supportive and engaging environment where children can develop their physical, social and emotional skills through the fun and teamwork of basketball.

“I want to thank the parents for bringing their children here today,” Commissioner Tucci said prior to the start of the night’s activities.  “Our goal is to make sure our special needs community has access to the same types of programs and opportunities as their peers, and we’re committed to doing that in every way we can”

The Bounce Out the Stigma Basketball Program was founded in 2005 by former professional basketball player Mike Simmel. Simmel, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at age two, found basketball to be his passion and outlet. The program was directly inspired by an experience at age 16 when he was removed from a basketball camp after having a seizure. Despite facing challenges, including special education gym class, Mike excelled in high school and college basketball. However, even with his achievements, he continued to feel the stigma associated with epilepsy. After a 13-year career playing with the world-famous Harlem Wizards, Mike was inspired to dedicate his time to working with special needs youth. He has returned to Nutley this year to continue pursuing his mission of helping children through the program.

“Seeing the smiles on these kids’ faces is incredible,” Commissioner Tucci added, “it truly feels like God’s work, and it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of.”
