Members of the Nutley community gathered in Town Hall Chambers on November 11 for the Township’s annual Veterans Day observance, paying tribute to all who have bravely served and defended our nation.
The ceremony prompted attendees to reflect on the true cost of freedom and the importance of honoring the memories, sacrifices, and achievements of those who have worn the uniform.
This year’s ceremony held special significance, as Township Mayor John V. Kelly III is currently on active military deployment in Iraq, serving our country with the New Jersey Army National Guard. Mayor Kelly’s mother Cindy Kelly joined Assemblywoman Carmen Morales, Commissioners Joseph P. Scarpelli and Alphonse Petracco along with residents in recognizing the courage and dedication of Nutley’s veterans.
“For family and for one another, because of your courage, we live in freedom,” Morales said. “Today, as we gather in the heart of Nutley, a community that deeply values service, family, and tradition, we recommit ourselves to honoring not just your past, but your future. That means supporting veterans in every stage of life, with access to healthcare, education, employment, and the respect that you have earned many times over.
“I also want to recognize the families of our veterans,” Morales continued. “Your quiet strength and support have been the foundation of your loved one’s service. You too serve. And today we thank you. On behalf of the community of Legislative District 34, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your example of what it truly means to love one's country. God bless our veterans.”
“At many ceremonies, people come up to me and say, ‘We really would like you to speak; you do so much for the veterans,’” said Commissioner Petracco. “But the truth is, I wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for those who served this country. Almost 20 years ago when I got elected, we had a lot of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam vets here. Unfortunately, a lot of them are gone. But we will never forget.
“When my children were young and they were playing sports on our fields, I always taught them freedom isn't free. A lot of people died for this country. So when you walk on that field, know that you live in the greatest country in the world. And it's because of everybody sitting in this room, past and present. So today and every day, I salute all who have served and all who are serving. I’d just like to give a tribute to my own dad, who served in Korea. He passed this year, and I know he’s up there with a lot of his Army buddies watching over us just as they did in life.”
Commissioner Scarpelli added: “Today we honor everyone who served. The fact that we live in the free country that we live in, that we have the liberties that we have, is because of the people who served and the people who are serving. Thank you to all who serve and continue to serve.”
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of Nutley’s Veteran of the Year Award to Navy veteran submariner David Ingrassia, senior vice commander of Nutley VFW Post 493. “Thank you to the Nutley Veterans Council, our Commissioners, and Nutley residents,” Ingrassia remarked. “Your support for our Buddy Poppy Program and our events keeps our doors open for veterans in need. To my brothers and sisters currently serving, and to the families who stand behind us, thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and love.”
Township of Nutley Veteran Affairs Director Daniel Jacoby praised Ingrassia: “David has dealt with a lot of unique perspectives in terms of the kind of situations that the military deals with. Being submerged and working in close quarters in a submarine takes a unique individual. He continues to be a tremendous resource, raising money and awareness for our veterans.”
This year, Nutley hosted two Ruck Marches to raise awareness for the estimated 22 veterans lost each day to suicide. Participants carried either a 22-pound rucksack or 22 canned goods to be donated to the Nutley Family Service Bureau Food Pantry. The ceremonies concluded with a moderate-paced Ruck March through Nutley Park to Kingsland Manor, while an Elite March was held the preceding Saturday.
The Township of Nutley remains committed to honoring those who serve and ensuring all veterans have access to the support and recognition they deserve.
