The Township of Nutley proclaimed June PRIDE month last night at the Board of Commissioners meeting.
Mayor John Kelly, III read the proclamation, which stated:
“Whereas, our nation was founded on the principle of equal rights for all people, but the fulfillment of this nation’s promise has been long in coming for many Americans. Some of the most inspiring moments in our history have a risen from the various civil rights movements that have brought one group after another from the margins to the mainstream of American Society; and
“Whereas, the Nutley Board of Commissioners welcomes and encourages diversity and inclusion within our community, and everyone should be able to live without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence, and hatred, based on race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation; and
“Whereas, June 28, 2025, marks the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York City. It is the historic turning point where the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and plus (LGBTQ+) citizens rose up and fought against the discriminator, which sparked the gay rights movement; and
“Whereas, in the movement towards civil rights for LGBTQ+ plus people, celebrations have taken place around the country every June to commemorate “Pride Month” and to recognize the advancement of the LGBTQ plus community; and
“Whereas, celebrating Pride Month does raise awareness and provide support and advocacy for the LGBTQ plus community and is an opportunity to become educated, engage in dialogue, strengthen alliances, and build understanding. While there has certainly been remarkable progress towards acceptance and equality, members of the LGBTQ plus community still continue to face, insensitivity, discrimination, and intolerance; and
“Whereas, we must commit to support and accept LGBTQ plus individuals in particular our youth, who compared to their peers, are more likely to experience, violence and bullying at school, suffer from depression, struggle with substance use, and to have attempted suicide; and
“Now, therefore be proclaimed, by the Nutley Board of Commissioners in the
Township of Nutley, County of Essex, State of New Jersey, hereby proclaim and recognize the month of June as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and plus (LGBTQ+) pride month, and we urge all residents to actively promote the principles of equality and liberty, and we remind the LGBTQ+ community that they are loved and cherished and seen for who they are, deserving of dignity, respect, and support throughout our Township.”
Following the reading of the proclamation, Nutley Pride’s Executive Director, Angelica Midolo, addressed the assembly. “Friends, family, allies, and the incredible LGBTQ+ community of Nutley, Happy Pride Month!,” she stated. “It's an honor to be here today to celebrate Pride Month. Thank you, Commissioner Evans, Commissioner Scarpelli, Commissioner Tucci, and Mayor Kelly for being here today and standing with Nutley Pride and the LGBTQ+ community here in Nutley. It is with immense joy and profound sense of gratitude that I stand before you today. This isn't just a month on a calendar. It's a vibrant, living testament to who we are, where we've come from, and where we're going, right here in our community.
“This Nutley Pride, our pride, is a grassroots effort. It's built on a foundation of empathy and acceptance from every corner of our town. It's powered by courageous voices of those who stepped out and the unwavering support of our allies who stand behind us. To our local businesses who have proudly displayed rainbows, who open their doors to our community, thank you for making Nutley a more welcoming place. To our community leaders who have championed inclusivity, recognize the importance of Pride Month throughout proclamations, and support your allies. To the families who have embraced their LGBTQ+ loved ones with unconditional love, you're building the foundation of a truly inclusive Nutley. And to every single person here today, whether you're identified as LGBTQ+ or you're an ally, thank you for showing up. Thank you for making our presence known, for fostering a space where we can all feel safe, seen, and celebrated. This unity isn't just about sharing a joyous day. It's about strengthening the fabric of our town, demonstrating that diversity truly makes us stronger.”
The Board of Commissioners shared their thoughts on the proclamation. “I’ve always believed that everyone should be able to live authentically in the skin they choose throughout their lives,” stated Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci. “We should respect and uphold the dignity of all individuals, ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities. This is not just for some; it’s for everyone. I am very proud to support this proclamation, as I have from the beginning.”
Commissioner Dr. Joseph Scarpelli added, “This proclamation is significant because it sends a clear message that Nutley is a welcoming community. We accept everyone and stand against discrimination for any reason. During my time as Mayor, I was proud to introduce this proclamation, and we will continue to support it.” Commissioner Tom Evans remarked, “Since we first voted on this proclamation, I have been happy to sign it and will continue to do so. My hope is that we can grow in spirit, mind, and body, looking at people for who they are without the need for labels.”
Mayor Kelly resonated with the BOC's sentiments. “I am proud to continue this proclamation,” he said. “It reflects Nutley’s commitment to being welcoming to all, regardless of who you are, where you come from, or your past. It shows that Nutley rises above the political climate in Washington. No matter the direction of the headwinds, we do what is right, and what is right is to welcome everyone, regardless of their background. I hope, as everyone has expressed here this evening, that this tradition continues to grow in Nutley.”
