Commissioner John V. Kelly and The Department of Public Affairs invite you to join in on the Veterans Day Ruck March Event!
Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States, observed annually on November 11. On this day we honor military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries, marking the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
Immediately following our annual 11AM Veterans Day Ceremony, which is held at the WW2 Monument, we will be begin our march in true military fashion. Participants will march with a weighted ruck sack or bag through Memorial Park from the WWII monument to Kingsland Manor and back for a 5K long march. The suggested weight for the rucksack will be 22lbs, in honor of the 22 veterans a day who take their own life. Please feel free to adjust the weight to your own personal comfort level. - any weight, or no weight, is permissible.
If you would like to participate in this event registration is open until November 5, 2021.
