Korean War Monument

The Korean War is often called the “Forgotten War” being one that goes under the radar of many Americans, a title and status that is often credited to the short timespan of the war and the lack of coverage it had. While the Korean war is often forgotten, it is important to note that many brave men and women who served had sacrificed their lives for the sake of protecting the virtues of freedom and liberty, as such it is important to make sure these sacrifices are not forgotten but honored. This memorial exists to dedicate the sacrifices made by the soldiers from Nutley who made sacrifices, on this memorial are listed 6 names of brave Nutley Soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the sake of freedom.

Joseph Di Nardo - On November 27, 1950, the American forces stationed in the Chosin Reservoir were attacked by the Chinese Communist Forces. As a result of this sudden attack, the Americans, who were outnumbered, were forced to retreat back to the friendly lines of Hagaru-ri on December 1st. Out of the numerous soldiers present within this altercation, Joseph DiNardo of Nutley was one of them. During the retreat to Hagaru-ri, many soldiers, such as Joseph Dinardo, would end up going missing or getting killed on the way back to Hagaru-ri. On December 2nd, the young soldier would be declared as Missing in Action.

John R. Gorman - Not much is known about this brave soldier’s life and legacy, all that is known are the details surrounding his death, with him being killed in Korean on May 18, 1951. Despite the lack of information available on this brave soldier, it is clear to see that his legacy is an honorable one as he sacrificed his life for the sake of others.

Richard Arthur Miller - Not much is known about this gallant soldier’s life and legacy, the most notable thing that is known about this man is the details surrounding his death. In July of 1951, Richard Arthur Miller would unfortunately die during training. While there is a lack of information regarding who he was or what he did, the time dedicated to his country is nothing but honorable.

Alex MacMillan - Corporal Alex “Sandy” MacMillanwas a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean war, being attached to Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. Unfortunately, tragedy would strike this young soldier as he would be killed in combat on March 22, 1951, after being ambushed during a patrol on Hill 232.

William Nolze - William Nolze was one of the many Nutley residents who had sacrificed their lives for the sake of protecting the virtues of freedom abroad during the Korean War. During his time in the military, Private First Class William Nolze had served with the 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. Unfortunately on April 24, 1951, tragedy would strike, as Nolze would be killed in action in South Korea.

Nicholas S. Pucci - Like many of those who served in the Korean War, Nicholas S. Pucci was forced to make many sacrifices for the sake of protecting freedom and upholding the virtues of liberty. During his time in the army, he had held the rank of Private First Class and had served with the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, with a speciality in heavy weapons. During the battle of Pusan, thousands of United States and UN peacekeeping soldiers worked together in an attempt to stop the invading North Korean army. During this battle, over 60,000 people died from both sides, with Nicholas Pucci being one of those 60,000 people. It is important to recognize Pucci’s sacrifice as one dedicated to freedom, as such it should be honored and remembered.
