- Recycling is picked up the day after your first garbage day.
- No recycling pick-up on snow plowing days
- Recycling containers MUST NOT be placed at the curb more than 24 hours prior to your scheduled collection date. Have recyclables out at the curb by 7:30 AM.
CO-MINGLED RECYCLING
The following items may be put together in a hard, reusable container weighing no more than 35 pounds. Place at curbside for pick-up.
- Glass bottles and jars
- Tin and aluminum cans
- All plastic bottles, containers and lids, and food grade tubs numbered 1 - 7
UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS:
Window glass, light bulbs, plates, ceramics, china crystal, mirrored glass, aerosol cans, paint cans, chemical cans, aluminum foil, flower or plant containers, styrofoam, food wrappers, utensils, toys
Plastic containers that have held hazardous materials such as motor oils, antifreeze and pesticides cannot be recycled!
PAPER
The following items may be put together in a hard, reusable container weighing no more than 35 pounds or tied into a 12” bundle. Place at curbside for pick-up.
- Newspapers
- Junk Mail
- Letters and Envelopes
- Light household cardboard
(eg. cereal and shoes boxes)

- Catalogs
- Soft cover books
- Mixed papers

UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS:
Paper plates, cups or towels, soiled papers, wax coated milk, juice, frozen food cartons
Please no plastic bags with recycling.
CORRUGATED CARDBOARD
Corrugated cardboard can be placed at curbside for pick-up. Only pieces cut to 12” x 18” and smaller will be collected.
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS
Township wide pick-up of consumer electronics will be done on MONDAYS, excluding holidays. Residents must call the Department of Public Works the week before, items are to be placed curbside, at (973) 284-4984 to provide their address and items to be picked up.

LEAF COLLECTION
All leaves must be placed in BIO-DEGRADABLE PAPER BAGS and will be picked up curbside between October 15 and December 15 by the Department of Public Works. At all other times, leaves will be picked up by the garbage collector.
LOOSE LEAVES ARE NOT TO BE PLACED INTO THE STREET AS PER TOWNSHIP ORDINANCE #2873
Landscapers removing leaves from township properties must be licensed by the Township of Nutley as per Township Ordinance #2874.
GRASS CLIPPINGS
Leaving your grass clippings on the lawn is recommended. However, if you do choose to remove your clippings from the lawn, please place them in bags with your regular garbage.
TIRE DISPOSAL
Residents may only dispose of TWO (2) tires (without rims) at a time by placing them curbside and scheduling a pick-up by contacting the Department of Public Works at (973) 284-4984.
USED MOTOR OIL
Bring used motor oil to any service station that works on cars or it can be dropped off at the Municipal Garage between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday thru Friday.
DO NOT DUMP OIL OR ANY CHEMICAL IN THE STORM SEWER TO POLLUTE OUR STREAMS AND RIVERS
VEHICLE BATTERIES
Vehicle batteries can be dropped off in the designated bin at the Municipal Garage between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday thru Friday.
BULKY WHITE GOODS
Bulky metal “White Goods” items such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, air conditioners, etc. will be picked up by the garbage collector and WILL BE RECYCLED. For the safety of our children, please REMOVE DOORS before placing items at the curb. Please contact the Health Department at (973) 284-4976 for pick-up information.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
The Essex County Utilities Authority sponsors a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day two times a year. For date and location please contact the ECUA at 973-857-2350 for more information.
