Nutley, New Jersey – Mayor Joanne Cocchiola announced today that the Township of Nutley plans to once again support Earth Hour, a global climate event led by the World Wildlife Fund. More than 240 cities around the world have already committed to go dark for one hour on March 27, 2010 at 8:30pm, as tens of millions of people from all corners of the world unite in a call for global action on climate change.
Since its inception three years ago, Earth Hour’s non-partisan approach has captured the world’s imagination and became a global phenomenon. Nearly one billion people turned out for Earth Hour 2009 – involving 4,100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents.
Last year, 80 million Americans and 318 U.S. cities officially voted for action with their light switch, joining iconic landmarks from around the world that went dark for Earth Hour, including: the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Seattle’s Space Needle, Las Vegas Strip, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and even St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
“This is a great way to call attention to global warming,” stated Mayor Joanne Cocchiola. “Turning your lights off for one hour is such a small sacrifice that can really make a big difference. It’s also a great catalyst for talking to our children about other ways we can help the environment and make our world a better place for future generations,” Mayor Cocchiola added.
“World Wildlife Fund is pleased that Mayor Joanne Cocchiola and the Township of Nutley is taking part in Earth Hour 2010. As lights go out in cities around the U.S. and the world on March 27th, Earth Hour will provide world leaders with an unmistakable mandate to take action,” said WWF President and CEO Carter Roberts. “The climate crisis threatens the ability of our planet to support its inhabitants. We want the world to know that Americans care about saving the planet and stand united in seeking to find solutions to climate change.”
Mayor Cocchiola, along with the Township Board of Commissioners and the GreeNutley Committee strongly encourages everyone in the community to participate. “We plan to reach out to local businesses through the Nutley Chamber of Commerce, including local restaurants, to encourage the unplugging and shutting off of non-essential lights and appliances. We are appealing to local restaurants to offer candle light dining, using flameless candles to cut down on their electrical use,” Mayor Cocchiola commented. She added that they plan to also invite all schools to pledge their involvement as well.
All residents, business owners, and schools are encouraged to visit World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour 2010 official website at https://www.myearthhour.org/homewhere you can pledge your support of this event. A link will also be available on www.nutleynj.org. Students and children should remember to have their parent or legal guardian’s permission before visiting the website. The Township of Nutley has pledged to participate as a local government body, and a formal resolution will be read at an upcoming Commission Meeting during the month of March.
