Nutley, NJ - Mayor Cocchiola and the Greenutley Committee recently announced the 2011 Farmers Market Season which will start on Sunday, June 5th from 9am to 1pm in Municipal Parking Lot #1 (off of William Street, behind the old Janette Shop off of Franklin Avenue).  This year's market has expanded to include weekly dates, to be held every Sunday from June 5th through until Sunday, October 30th.

"We are very excited to expand the market," commented Mayor Joanne Cocchiola.  "Weekly markets are historically more successful because, quite simply, community members are more likely to make it part of their weekend errands - plus it's just easier to remember a weekly event vs. several different dates," the Mayor added.  2011 farmers include Asparacolas Farms; Bracco Farms; Hoboken Farm Stand; Pickles, Olives, Etc.; The Original Delancey Street Peanut Company; and, The Yellow Dog Bakery – specializing in handmade organic dog cookies, dog cakes and specialty pet gift baskets.

The June 5th Farmers Market will have live entertainment featuring local resident Harvey Wechter and Paradise Vendors.  Also, for all you avid gardeners, Commissioner Scarpelli and the Department of Public Works will once again sponsor Compost Day on June 5th from 9am to 1pm in Municipal Parking Lot #8 - directly across from the Farmers Market.

“The compost being given away is the final product from the leaves that were placed out on the curb in the fall,” said Commissioner Scarpelli.  “Gardeners call the compost ‘Black Gold’ because it increases water-holding capacity, improves soil structure, reduces compaction, allows for better root penetration, increases heat absorption and reduces erosion.”  Be sure to stop by and also meet Master Gardener Mike Schop for gardening tips and to answer your gardening questions.  Bring your buckets & shovels and take as much compost as you'd like.

The Greenutley Committee will have a presence at the first market of each month, with a Farmers Market manager on site to answer questions specifically about the market, as well as about other Greenutley initiatives.  Also, look for special Farmers Market events throughout the 2011 season.
