Mayor's Weight Loss Challenge

In Partnership with Mountainside Hospital

Back by popular demand! The 2010 Mayor's Weight Loss Challenge is a 16-week program – a collaborative effort between Mayor Joanne Cocchiola and The Mountainside Hospital. The challenge is geared towards teaching participants how to make long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Last year, participants lost a total of 1,894 pounds. The goal this year is to surpass the 2,000 pound mark.

The Mayor's Weight Loss Challenge is open to Nutley residents, as well as Board of Education and Township employees, and is open to the first 300 registrants. Participants are welcome to register as an 'individual' or as a 'team' consisting of 5-7 people. Weigh-ins will be conducted every other Monday starting on Monday, January 11th, with the final weigh-in scheduled for Monday, May 3rd.

Sponsored by The Mountainside Hospital, Signature Fitness and Starlight Fit & Dance, the program offers many great ways for participants to lose weight and get fit. There will be fitness and nutrition evaluations (by appointment); free and discounted exercise classes; nutrition seminars; motivational events; support groups; 5k training; and more. Nutley High School will also support our challengers once again by opening the NHS weight room twice weekly.

New to the program this year are Hoffman La-Roche, Fleet Feet Sports of Montclair and Focus Physical Therapy. Roche is sponsoring supermarket tours at Nutley Park ShopRite, which will help our participants make healthier choices when they grocery shop. Fleet Feet and Focus Physical Therapy will work closely to train participants who are interested in running the 5k Nutley Chamber of Commerce Run. Focus will also offer support group meetings throughout the program.

All these tools will help participants reach their goals while staying motivated and being fully supported and monitored by the Nutley Health Department, the Nutley School Nurses, and the staff at The Mountainside Hospital. Prizes will be awarded to both the team and individual who lose the highest percentage of body weight at the conclusion of the program. An award ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the program.

Obesity is becoming an epidemic in our country. Childhood obesity rates are rising, while physical fitness and good nutrition are being forgotten. Let's set a good example for our children, and make a change for the better. Register today!
