Why Go Green?
Through education, events, and activities, Greenutley is raising awareness of the importance of green choices in our everyday lives and providing simple, effective ways for each of us to contribute to the sustainability of our community and our planet, including saving energy, recycling and reducing waste, eating local/organic food, and reducing pollution.
Sustainable Jersey Program
Sustainable Jersey™ is a certification and incentive program for municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term.
The mission of Sustainable Jersey is to make New Jersey healthy, just, and efficient one municipality at a time. Sustainable Jersey is a consensus oriented, science based, politically relevant effort to align the interests and resources of actors from state and local, public and private, for the common purpose of achieving a sustainable New Jersey and world.
The Mayors' Committee for a Green Future and NJ State League of Municipalities will provide recognition to 'sustainable communities' – those communities that adopt, support and implement a specified set to sustainability and greening initiatives. After the first year, the project partners will release a second round of action, tools, and incentives, raising the bar and moving municipalities further down the road to a green future. The process is intended to be a long term effort that builds on past success and becomes a staple among local greening and sustainability efforts in New Jersey.
The Township of Nutley is currently in the process of becoming certified as a Sustainable Community.
Farmer's Market
On Sunday, September 13, 2009, Nutley will host a Farmer's Market in conjunction with the Greenutley Eco-Fest. This event will take place in Memorial Park II, off of Vreeland Avenue, just across from the Mud Hole. In case of inclement weather, the Nutley High School Parking Lot has been designated as an alternate location.
Items available for purchase will include fresh, locally grown seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs as well as many other delectable delights.
We are in the process of introducing a monthly Farmer's Market in town running June through November for 2010. Check back regularly for updates.
Participating Farmers:
- Matarazzo Famers
- Hoboken Farms
- Asprocolas Acres
Town-wide Garage Sale
Township residents are invited to participate in Nutley's first ever Greenutley Town-Wide Garage Sale on Saturday, October 3rd from 8am to 4pm—with a rain date of Saturday, October 17th. The Township's goal is to reduce waste, reuse and recycle items by encouraging residents to sort through and clean out all gently used household items.
Just sign up and sort through your stuff—we'll do the rest. We will publicize the event by placing advertisements in local papers, send press releases to local papers, advertise on local cable channels, advertise in local church bulletins, post a listing of participating households on our township website and place posters around town.
100% of the proceeds collected through the permit fees will go towards future Greenutley initiatives in town. Participating families will keep their profits from the sale. Garage sale applications and flyers are available from the Greenutley forms and resources area.
Volunteer Opportunities
Nutley's "go green committee" is a community organization that is focused on green and responsible living in Nutley. The events and programs that will support the Township's "green" efforts cannot be made possible without volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for future events to support our green initiative, please register as a community volunteer.
