In the next step to creating a unique youth sports program, Nutley Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mauro Tucci has announced the formation of the Nutley Parks and Recreation Oversight Committee. The appointment follows the successful implementation of the department’s Code of Conduct and Coaches Fingerprinting programs.

“Almost every day, I read or hear about an incident between a coach and a parent, between a child and a coach, or even between two parents at youth sports events,” Tucci says. “We want to ensure that those kinds of things do not take place in Nutley.” Tucci took the first steps towards preventing those types of incidents by implementing the Code of Honor program, which requires all parents and coaches to sign a contract with the department as well as mandatory fingerprinting for all coaches. “We started those programs a few years ago and they have been very successful,” adds Tucci. “I want to continue that success with the Oversight Committee.”

The Oversight Committee will be made up of a panel of three Nutley residents who have had backgrounds in youth sports. “I wanted to create a Committee that parents and coaches felt comfortable with,” Tucci says. “If anyone is upset with the actions of coaches, players, parents or officials during any of our sports programs at any of our fields or facilities, the Oversight Committee will be the sounding board to go to without any fear of repercussions. It can be even be done anonymously. As long as the complaint has merit, the Committee will review each situation and then make a recommendation to the Parks Department on what type of response is needed. Together we will then make the final decision.”

“Ninety-nine percent of our coaches and parents are incredible teachers and supporters of our programs.” Tucci continues. “But you always have that one percent who ruin it for all of the rest. We won’t accept that. We want to set a standard that other towns look to as a model, and I think this Committee will help do that.”

Tucci has named lifelong Nutley resident and business owner Thomas Greco as the Committee Chairman. Greco will be joined on the Committee by Nutley residents Yolonda Merritt and Mark Feaster. “Tom has been involved in Nutley sports as a player, coach and officer for 40 years,” Tucci states. “Yolonda’s experience covers the gamut from youth to professional sports while Mark has been one of our finest coaches and officers over the last few years. I have all the confidence in the world in these three parents. They all share the same philosophy that represents the best in youth sports. More importantly, they all have shown a knowledge for finding what’s fair and in the best interests of our children and our sports programs.”
