Chief of Police John U. Holland
John Holland
was born in
Newark
,
New Jersey
, and raised in neighboring
Belleville
. He attended Bloomfield Vocational and
Technical High School
. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into U.S. Army, where he served with
the 39th Combat Engineer Battalion in the
Republic of South Vietnam
.
In September of 1972, he joined
the Nutley Police Department. John attended the William Paterson College of New
Jersey, where, in 1977, he graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor of Science
degree in Public Safety Administration.
His police career steadily progressed,
attaining the rank of Sergeant in 1977, Captain in 1986, and Deputy Chief in 1990.
In September of 1990, he was selected to attend the prestigious
FBI
National
Academy
in
Quantico, Virginia
.
Since 1988 John has been a proud
member of The New Jersey Air National Guard’s 108th Air Refueling Wing.
In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the
United States
, he was called to active duty. Within months John was flying combat mission over
Afghanistan
as a crewmember on KC135 aerial tanker. He was awarded the Air Medal for his participation
in Operation Enduring Freedom, and he has been a frequent participant in Operation
Noble Eagle, flying combat air patrols over our nation’s capitol.
John and his wife Doreen moved
to
Nutley
in 1974, and have always been active in community affairs. Doreen is an elementary
school teacher who has taught in Yantacaw, Lincoln, and
Spring Garden
schools. John presently serves as a president of the Nutley Music Boosters Association,
an organization that supports instrumental music programs in the Nutley Schools.
He is also a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and
Vietnam Veterans of America.
John and Doreen are grateful for the many opportunities given to them, but are
most grateful for their children, Sean Michael and Wendy Marie, who give real meaning
and true purpose to their lives.
