Mayor Cocchiola Announces Township Participation in Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition

Nutley, NJ – Mayor Joanne Cocchiola has announced that the Township will participate in the Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. The Competition is for high school juniors and seniors planning to further their education after high school. The purpose of the scholarship is to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government, while raising awareness of municipal government in general.

“This scholarship competition will encourage our future municipal leaders by paying homage to all of our Township’s public servants,” commented the Mayor. “Our elected officials along with a cadre of dedicated professionals are guardians of our hometown comforts and security. They give of their time and talents to help plan our community and preserve our way of life.”

Students will be required to write an essay on the theme “What My Mayor and Governing Body Do Best.” The essay must be approximately 500 words in length, and be based upon each student’s perceptions and experiences with their municipality’s local government. Essays are due to the Nutley High School Guidance Office by Wednesday, March 8.

The statewide semi-finalist will be selected by a judging committee. Fifteen finalists will be selected by the League of Municipalities. Three finalists will receive a $1,000 award.
